Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any hidden fees or subscriptions?

No. The price on a teacher's profile is the full price you pay — no subscriptions, no contact fees. Some teachers who are members of the GMMQ (Quebec Musicians' Guild) include a pension surcharge, but this is always included in the displayed price. You are only charged when a lesson is confirmed by your teacher.

Do you offer in-person lessons near me?

Yes — Musiprof primarily connects you with teachers near you for in-person lessons at home or in studio. Online lessons are also available. Beyond private lessons, we offer a band program and community recitals for a complete musical experience.

What happens after I purchase?

The teacher will contact you within 24–48 hours to schedule your first lesson. If there's no contact within that window, Musiprof follows up on your behalf.

What is the refund policy?

You only pay for lessons taken. We refund untaken lessons minus a penalty (the lesser of $50 or 10% of the remaining value), as per Quebec consumer protection law.

How frequently do lessons unfold?

By default, lessons are designed to be taken once per week to help you maintain consistency and momentum. A 5-lesson package, for example, is intended to be completed in 5 consecutive weeks. However, we understand that every student's goals are unique. If your teacher agrees, lessons can be scheduled at a different frequency (e.g., every 2 weeks or once per month). Please discuss your preferred schedule with your teacher during your first contact. Your package includes a 30-day grace period after your last scheduled session. If you are doing bi-weekly lessons, ask your teacher to extend your session dates in the system to ensure your file remains active.

Is there a Satisfaction Guarantee?

Yes! We want you to find the perfect match. If your first session isn't right, contact us within 48 hours. We'll credit 50% of the lesson cost back to your account so you can try a different teacher immediately.

Why should I pay through Musiprof instead of paying my teacher directly?

Paying through Musiprof is what keeps you protected — the Satisfaction Guarantee, refunds, and dispute support only apply to payments made on the platform. Paying a teacher directly (cash, e-transfer) voids those protections, and we can't help if something goes wrong. If a teacher ever asks you to pay outside Musiprof, please let us know.

More about piano lessons

How often should piano lessons be?
Piano lessons usually take place once per week. This is the standard for most piano teachers. The reason is that it allows students enough time to work on the lesson material between lessons. It’s important for students to have enough time between lessons to develop good practise habits. One lesson a week helps achieve that.
Is one piano lesson a week enough?
For most people, one lesson a week is ideal. For others, 2 lessons a week can allow a student to learn a complementary piano topic like technique, music theory or even music history.
Some students have difficulty working on piano lesson materials by themselves. They may lack discipline, or they could be struggling due to a learning disability. For these students, a second weekly lesson can allow them to revisit the material a second time or to help them learn to practise properly.
Are piano lessons worth it for adults?
Piano lessons for adults are very popular. Studies have proven that adults of all ages exhibit brain plasticity. Meaning, you can teach an old dog new tricks. Furthermore, learning to play an instrument has proven benefits for preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in old age.
Adults may not learn as naturally and as quickly as young children, but they have the advantage of having better developed muscles and increased levels of discipline, which leads to better practising strategies.
What age should children start their piano lessons?
The recommended age to begin private piano lessons in Montreal for kids is between 5-9 years old. Children under 5 will have a difficult time learning the necessary skills (fingering, learning the notes, reading, etc.)  That said, children under 5 can certainly take music lessons, but lessons should be focused on easy percussion, singing, and simple ear training.
What makes a good piano teacher for kids?
Finding a good piano teacher for children is not the same as finding one for adults.  A good teacher needs to have experience with kids and understand what makes them tick.  We’ve written a great blog post on the topic: 5 tips for teaching music to children.

The option of 2 lessons per week can be a good idea if you would like to study a complementary topic such as music theory. This will deepen your understanding of music and ultimately allow you to progress faster.
