Gabriel G. — Saxophone Teacher — Villeray, Montreal

Masters degree in jazz performance at McGill University Undergraduate degree in jazz performance (saxophone) from Université de Montreal DESS in film scoring from UQAM Saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger, Gabriel Genest moved from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean to Montreal in 2013. As a saxophonist and clarinetist, he currently works as a sideman with many ensembles in the jazz, singer-songwriter and world music scenes. He also leads his own ensemble, the Gabriel Genest Quintet. His first album, Triptyque, received the François Marcaurelle prize from the Montreal OFF Jazz Festival. His compositions are also performed by the McGill and UdeM Chamber Jazz Ensembles, as well as recorded by the Université de Montreal’s Big Band under the direction of Ron Di Lauro. He also contributed as one of the main arrangers for the Forever Gentlemen tour with Garou, Roch Voisine and Corneille In addition to teaching saxophone, flute and clarinet in his studio to students aged 6 to 83, Gabriel is musical director for *Le Tonique Big Band* and *L'ensemble Jazz du Collège Beaubois*. He also leads the teacher team of the jazz week at Camp Musical du Saguenay Lac-St-Jean. Finally, he teaches instrumental clinics (saxophone, clarinet and flute) in many high schools of the metropolitan area.

As a teacher, my goal is to help every student, regardless of their current level, to fulfill their potential as an instrumentalist, musician and artist. I believe it is very important to work on all these three aspects, putting the emphasis on one or the other from time to time, according to the students evolution. In that way, we make sure to keep the joy of learning alive! - Curiosity and creativity is encouraged - The technical and theoretical aspects of my classes are always in service of musicality - Have as much fun as possible playing music! - In the first lesson, we will talk about your musical tastes, your short and long term objectives. We will analyze your musical strengths and weaknesses in order to get you moving straight away in the right direction.
