Veteran musician and music therapist Bryan Highbloom is offering free music lessons to help Montrealers of all levels rediscover their creativity and develop their own unique sound.
A lifelong musician, Highbloom’s mission is simple yet profound: to make music accessible to all and to help students understand why they play. His lessons, tailored to each student’s abilities and interests, blend decades of musical experience with an emphasis on personal expression and mindfulness.
“I want to help musicians of all levels find their own unique sound in music,” says Highbloom. “My lessons are adapted to the abilities and needs of each individual student.”
Lessons That Go Beyond Technique
Highbloom’s teaching goes far deeper than scales and theory. His approach explores both the intellectual and emotional sides of musicianship, helping students connect to the why behind their playing.
Among the topics covered:
-
The relationship between technique and expression
-
How to establish creative flow while playing
-
How to practice to find your own sound and balance intellect with emotion
-
Managing creative blocks without anxiety or stress
-
Understanding time in music, inspired by the quote from philosopher Maurice Nicoll:
“In time things are seeking completion. In now, all things are complete.”
A Life Devoted to the Transformative Power of Music
Bryan Highbloom has been a music professional since the age of 17 and is recognized as one of Montreal’s pioneers of free jazz and improvisation, a movement documented in John Gilmore’s book Mon Pays, c’est la musique.
For 35 years, he served as a music therapist at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH), where he explored the healing potential of music with patients and staff. He also founded the JGH Jazz Festival, an annual celebration that brings together hospital staff, patients, and professional musicians to share in the joy of improvisation and community.

Continuing His Mission Through Free Music Lessons
Now semi-retired, Highbloom is turning his attention back to the broader Montreal community. By offering one-on-one free music lessons, he hopes to inspire others to approach music as a form of self-discovery rather than performance.
“Music is not just about getting the notes right,” he says. “It’s about expressing who you are, finding your voice, and connecting to something greater.”
