Music Professional: Performer, Teacher, Composer, Arranger

Born in Montreal, Myrtle Thomas is a recognized artist and educator, celebrated for her musical versatility and deep expertise. A multi-instrumentalist — flutist, vocalist, and pianist — she excels in classical, gospel, and jazz traditions.

Myrtle made her acclaimed debut in the role of The Other Woman during the Montreal premiere of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (2014). She has since performed internationally with Holland America Cruise Lines, appeared at the Toronto Jazz Festival with hip-hop artist Milla Thyme, and most recently performed as a flutist with Ensemble Obiora, the first Canadian classical music ensemble composed primarily of musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Academically, Myrtle holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Graduate Diploma in Classical Flute Performance from Concordia University, as well as a Master’s in Jazz Performance from McGill University. She studied under renowned mentors such as Ranee Lee (Juno Award–winning jazz vocalist) and Camille Thurman (American composer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer). She also trained in composition and arranging with Joe Sullivan, John Hollenbeck (Grammy-nominated composer), and Christine Jensen (Juno Award–winning jazz artist).

As a passionate educator, Myrtle shares her experience with the community by teaching at institutions such as the Viva Systema Program – Giant Steps, the JAM Vocal Performance School, and Royal Vale Elementary. Her teaching approach bridges musical styles and empowers students to grow while benefiting from her unique artistic perspective.

Her exceptional career — combining international performances, advanced academic training, and strong pedagogical engagement — establishes Myrtle Thomas as both an authoritative voice and a trusted resource in the field of music education.
